Serb nationals accounts for 30% of foreigners, with 5.606 inhabants, followed by Rumanians with 2.036, Croatian, Chinese, Albanians, Kosovarians, Bosnians, and Ukranians (503 residents). The municipality extends over a territory of 84,49 sq km, with a population density of approximately 2.433 inhabitants per sq km. The Gulf of Trieste is part of the Adriatic Sea.
The municipality of Trieste is both a provincial and a regional capital (for the Province of Trieste and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region). Among the numerous natural vocations of this city (ranging from tourism, to the port, to the insurance business), the city has clearly distinguished itself worldwide as a “city of science” and of knowledge in general, thanks to the presence of a university, a higher education institution, an academy of music, and several distinguished national and international research bodies, which attract several thousand foreign researchers and students every year. As of 2007 the municipality of Trieste has promoted the constitution of a network of 19 of these institutions, which now cooperate under the name of Trieste city of knowledge.
