ICGEB - International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) has operated under the United Nations System for 25 years as a centre of excellence, putting scientists from developing countries in contact with the top experts in respective fields of research. The Centre is supported by more than 60 Member States and has three laboratories (in Trieste, New Delhi and Cape Town) with over 500 researchers.
The most important research activities are conducted in the field of biomedicine (infectious cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases), plant biology and biotechnology for energy resources.
The Centre organizes more that 20 international meetings and workshops each year, awards pre- and postdoctoral fellowships, and the lab facilities in Trieste include the most advanced equipment available today. ICGEB offers technical assistance for research projects and transfer of know-how to the biotech industrial sector
